Welsh Marches – Saturday 25th March 2017

** Sold Out in All Classes **

The Welsh Marches line traverses the hills of Central Wales, starting at Newport and running to Shrewsbury by way of Abergavenny, Hereford and Craven Arms. Our day begins with a steam departure from Tyseley, stopping at Birmingham Snow Hill, before heading down Old Hill bank and joining the old Birmingham & Gloucester railway with the Cotswold Hills looming majestically to our left. We continue through Gloucester, across the River Severn and along the western bank of the estuary with its breathtaking views, to our morning photo opportunity at Chepstow. After a short, we continue to head south and across the border into Wales. At Maindee Junction, we turn North, bypassing Newport and onto the Welsh Marches line for the climb towards Abergavenny and Hereford with spectacular views of the Black Mountains including the famous Sugar Loaf.

We stop for an afternoon break at the cathedral city of Hereford. Hereford was founded in Saxon times. With a medieval bridge over the River Wye, it retains a mix of buildings from almost every architectural era. The Cathedral, established in the 7th Century, contains the famous 800-year old St Stephen’s Chair. The Mappa Mundi, a 13th Century view of the known world, is housed in the Cathedrals library.

Our day continues through Dinmore Tunnels, Craven Arms and around Shrewsbury, before looping back to the Midlands through Wolverhampton, Walsall, around the Sutton Park Line and back to Tyseley.

Steam hauled throughout by No: 5043 “Earl of Mount Edgcumbe”. Commencing at Tyseley Warwick Road, additional pickups at Birmingham Moor Street (returns to Walsall or B’Ham New Street – routing to be confirmed).
