Birmingham Railway Museum Trust has acquired a number of coaches for Vintage Trains services. The Vintage Trains coaches comprise a number of ex-BR Mark I and Mark II coaches. The Mark II coaches are undergoing a refurbishment programme in Tyseley Locomotive Works. The aim is to provide a set of Mark II Tourist Second Open (TSO) coaches for the 'Shakespeare Express' service and other main line excursions. These modern vehicles, which have vacuum brakes allowing them to be used with our steam engines, provide passengers with excellent visibility to enjoy the views from the train. They last saw regular service in Scotland and arrived at Tyseley still bearing Highland Clan names. Four TSOs are now operational within the Vintage Trains coach set together with a Mark II Brake Second Open (BSOT) that also features a mini buffet. More
recently the Trust has acquired some BR Mark I Pullman vehicles, which
were built by Metro Cammell for East Coast Main Line services during
the early 1960s. After these vehicles were displaced from front
line services by High Speed Trains in the late 1970s, they were used
in East Anglia as First Open coaches. They were later withdrawn
and acquired by the Steam Locomotive Operators Association in the 1980s
for use on steam charters. They were withdrawn from steam charter
services in the early 1990s and were stored prior to being eventually
acquired by Flying Scotsman Services for a proposed Pullman dining train
service between London and Stratford-upon-Avon. Those plans were
abandoned and the vehicles were sold to Birmingham Railway Museum Trust.
Three of them have now been refurbished and provide kitchen facilities
& dining accommodation on Vintage Trains. |
