Itinerary: (subject to confirmation)

The small Fenland city of Ely was an island until the draining of the Fens in the seventeenth century, before which it was known as ‘Eel Island’. St Etheldreda founded an abbey here in 673, later sacked by the Danes in 870. The area was a stronghold of Hereward the Wake against William the Conqueror, Ely Cathedral being built to celebrate the latter’s victory and was completed in 1351, and is known locally as the ‘Ship of the Fens’. It’s other famous resident was Oliver Cromwell and his house is now the Tourist Information Centre. Time to explore the ancient narrow streets, take a boat trip along the picturesque waterfront or visit the Craft Market and antique shops.

The train will start from Vintage Trains' own platform within the site at Tyseley Locomotive Works (formerly known as Birmingham Railway Museum). There is a large car park, which may be used free of charge by passengers on this train. From

The trains to pick up at Burton-on-Trent, Willington and Melton Mowbray. It then travels via Oakham, Stamford, Peterborough and March to Ely and return.
