Vintage Trains Society
Vintage Trains Society (VTS) was formerly known as the Friends of Birmingham Railway Museum.
VTS consists of members who want to provide support to the various subsidiaries of the Birmingham Railway Museum Trust (BRMT) i.e. Vintage Trains (main line operations), Tyseley Locomotive Works (the home base for the Shakespeare Express) and the Visitor Centre (public displays of railway artifacts).
All members share a common interest to preserve steam and railway heritage for the current and future generations.
Funds raised by VTS are donated to restoration projects, and to support the activities of BRMT including site projects.
The Society sponsors membership of the Birmingham Heritage Forum.
Membership subscriptions finance a newsletter and magazine plus administration costs and any surplus is used for donations to other projects.
VTS sponsored the restoration of Swindon Works Shunters Truck and made a sizeable donation to the restoration appeal for 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe.
If more people join VTS then it would be able to provide more financial help to the Trust for projects such as: restoration & maintenance of Tyseley collection locomotives, restoration & maintenance of the Vintage Trains coach fleet, the Stratford-upon-Avon Steam Locomotive Centre project and Tyseley Locomotive Works site maintenance & improvements.

MEMBER BENEFITSConcessionary Fares - Shakespeare Express
VTS members benefit from concessionary fares for Standard Class travel and can use these benefits as many times as they like. There are no concessions for Premier Dining Class travel.
Members who can produce a current VTS membership card can purchase a Standard Class return ticket for the price of a single ticket.
Partner members (Husband & Wife) - the benefit is available to both individuals included in the "Partner" membership.
Family members (2 Adults & 2 Children) - the benefit is available to all members of the "Family" membership.
Members may use this concession for purchase of tickets for their own travel on the Shakespeare Express as many times as they want. Each return journey needs a separate ticket. The tickets purchased at the members discounted fare must be for the members' own use and proof of membership will be required when purchasing them and on the trains.
This concession applies only to the regular summer Sunday daytime service trains running between July & September and when celebrity engines are not being used. Where additional special 'out of season' Shakespeare Express trains or evening trains are run and/or celebrity engines are being used, then member concessions will not usually be available. Members are asked to look out for special train notices which may indicate whether the concession will apply.Tyseley Locomotive Works Open Days - Concessionary Admission
Concessionary admission tickets are usually available for most Tyseley Locomotive Works Open Days to VTS members holding a current valid membership card. This must be produced at the time of ticket purchase.Vintage Trains Excursions
There are no concessions available for VTS members on the one-off Vintage Trains tours
Many members volunteer their services to Vintage Trains, the Shakespeare Express, Tyseley Locomotive Works or the Visitor Centre.
There are many opportunities, which require a variety of skills and interests.
Please note that all volunteers are welcome, and we will endeavour to match their aspirations with the opportunities available. However it must be understood that for the operational activities, individuals will need to undergo appropriate supervised training and assessment of suitability. There may be very limited requirements for more volunteers for some operational activities.
Newsletter & Magazine
'Tyseley News' is the members newsletter. Its aim is to keep members updated with all the news from Tyseley Locomotive Works, the Museum & Vintage Trains. A magazine ('Steam In Trust') is produced annually.
Newsletters By Email
VTS members can now receive 'Tyseley News' by email. This saves printing, postage & distribution costs so that more money can be directed to the Trust's restoration projects.
Note : You need your membership number available to sign up.
Once signed up, members should inform us if they change their email address by completing the email request form again with the new details. If you don't keep VTS up-to-date with your e-mail address, then you will not receive 'Tyseley News' hot of the press!
All is not lost! You can catch up by referring to this page where you will be able to read the latest edition of 'Tyseley News', when it is made available online for non-members.Note to Non-Members
The VTS Committee has decided to make' Tyseley News' available to you, after our Members have had chance to read it first. We hope you find it of interest and it encourages you to join us and play your part in keeping steam heritage preserved and also running our trains on the mainline.
